Pakistan will be always politically unstable with out presidential system, said President, Field Marshal Ayub Khan.
It is a happy news that in Tunis , a professor won the presidential elections and defeated established pillars of political parties and politicians. He stood in the elections as an independent candidate. No party was on his back. He won elections on two points. First; he openly declared Israel is an aggressor state and Tunis will have no diplomatic relations with Israel. Second; he promised to establish an Islamic welfare state based on democracy and social justice.
The people voted for him and he won with thumping majority.
As Pakistanis what we can learn from this example? We must reject parliamentary system and go for presidential system. Parliamentary system in Pakistan supports the elite and moneyed class. This system emulates and buttresses horse trading. No Prime Minister feels stable and comfortable in this system. He can not implement his policies. Field Marshal Ayub Khan was President of Pakistan from 1958 to 1970. He introduced much economic plans. I had met him several times when he was passing his last days of life in Islamabad. He was convinced that Pakistan will be always politically unstable with out presidential system.
Today, the present government of Imran Khan is being blackmailed by MQM and PML( Q). I have written time and again in my columns that Supreme Court of Pakistan should give verdict for referendum whether presidential or parliamentary system is our requirement? The present National Assembly and Senate are the product of obsolete parliamentary system and consists of moneyed stratum.
Second; the lesson to be learnt is to condemn Israel as an aggressive state and fight for the rights of the oppressed Palestinians. The Muslim countries should be ashamed of being indifferent and silent on the issue of Palestine.
Third lesson is we must establish social justice. The Muslim world is devoid of social justice. We have monarchic, feudal and capitalist system in most of the Muslims states. Pakistan needs social reforms.
